We’re getting on like a house on fire

DAVID MOYES has held FOUR meetings with Wayne Rooney to convince the unsettled star to stay at Manchester United.

We’re getting on like a house on fireThe new Red Devils boss left for the club’s pre-season tour of Australia and the Far East last night with Rooney alongside him on the flight.

The England striker is still considering his Old Trafford future after falling out of favour with former boss Alex Ferguson.

Yet Moyes insists Rooney will not be sold and said: “I’ve met Wayne two, three, four times already.

“A lot has been said about us over the years but we have a really good relationship.

“He came to my house and I have recently been to his to have a chat. Also he is here with us every day.

“He has been training great and they are telling me he’s in the best shape they’ve seen him in for a long time.

“From that point of view I am taking it as a positive and I’m going to try to get the best Wayne Rooney I possibly can.

“The club have already stated that Wayne is not for sale.”

Moyes is desperate to appease Rooney after he was left out of the team by Ferguson during last season’s title run-in.

The player was privately fuming when Fergie claimed he was out of condition and wanted to end his nine-year stay at United.

Yet while Moyes is determined to reinvigorate his star striker, he still plans major changes to his squad in the next few weeks.

United’s only summer signing has been £2million defender Guillermo Varela.

But Moyes said: “Don’t be fooled by our lack of transfer activity.

“Take it from me, we are working very hard behind the scenes to try to improve the squad.”

Moyes also thinks this could be the most open title race in years after the summer’s managerial changes.

He added: “It’s the first time there has been a real major change in the Premier League with the managers at the top end.

“Jose Mourinho is coming back and will be terrific at Chelsea — he’s been a success wherever he’s gone.

“Arsenal, Manchester City — who also have a new manager — and Tottenham are trying to challenge.

“I really do see an exciting Premier League.”

But Moyes must continue his pre-season plans without captain Nemanja Vidic. The defender, 31, has had his last two campaigns ruined by serious knee injuries.

Now he is suffering from sciatica and was left at home as the team flew out for their three-week tour.

Vidic hopes to play some part in the tailend of the tour.

But United’s medical department may well advise he stays at home so as not to aggravate the problem with long flights.

Also injured are Chris Smalling (foot), Ashley Young (ankle) and Nani (broken nose).

Robin van Persie, David De Gea and Shinji Kagawa will join the squad later due to international commitments.
