Torres chasing down Raúl

Spain's drubbing of Tahiti at the Estádio do Maracanã was the country's third highest scoreline ever – behind the 13-0 win over Bulgaria in 1933 and the 12-1 win over Malta in 1984.

Fernando Torres, who had not scored for his country since the 2012 European Championship final against Italy, has now netted 35 times for Spain. 'El Niño' is Spain's third all-time top scorer – behind Villa (56) and Raúl (44).

Against Tahiti, Torres scored four goals for the national team for the first time – he had previously notched up hat-tricks on two occasions. The list of Spanish players who have scored the most goals in one game reads as follows: Chacho (6), Lángara (5), Butragueño (on two occasions), Raúl, Poli Rincón, Rubio, Santillana, Tejada and Zarra (4).

Villa – 56 goals from 90 matches – had not been on target for Spain since 11th October 2011 against Scotland. The Asturian claimed his third hat-trick for his country and is the only player other than Torres to score three trebles for Spain.
