Media reports in the United Kingdom seem to indicate that Arsenal have activated a release clause in the Belgium international's contract, thought to be around £24million.

Manchester United were considered Fellaini's most likely suitors after David Moyes took over, but moving to the Emirates is now considered most likely after reports indicated that Arsenal have turned to the towering Belgian to fill their midfield void.

They have already made some strides in improving on the financial front after slashing part of their wage bill by announcing the impending departures of Sebastien Squillaci, Andriy Arshavin and Denilson.

Moreover, chief executive Ivan Gazidis also took to the media to reiterate his faith in manager Arsene Wenger and stated that funds would be made available to bolster the squad over the summer.

Wenger, who recently helped ensure qualification to the Champions League for the 15th consecutive year, wants top-notch signings in order to avoid another topsy-turvy year for the Gunners. The north London club only snuck into the top four as late as April and are said to be in the market for a new midfielder as well as a forward.

Should the deal be completed, Fellaini would be one of Wenger's costliest signings with the £16.5million acquisition of Santi Cazorla currently the highest transfer fee sanctioned by the Frenchman.

Perhaps, most tellingly British firm Sky Bet have also slashed the odds on Fellaini making the move to the Emirates Stadium.

Despite the reports, Everton chairman Bill Kenwright has consistently maintained that Fellaini is in no hurry to move away from Goodison Park. It remains to be seen if the midfielder is interested in a transfer although, previously, he has indicated a desire to play in the Champions League.

Kenwright told the Times on Wednesday: "I have to say he has given me every indication he doesn't want to go."

Fellaini was one of Everton's top performers last season, finishing as their top scorer in the Premier League with 11 goals.

He joined the club from Standard Liege in 2008 for a club record £15million.
