Mesut Ozil believes his Real Madrid team mate Cristiano Ronaldo is clearly the favourite for the Ballon d'Or.

The Ballon d'Or awards are given out in January, but the debate on the candidates has already begun with the conclusion of the season. Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has claimed that the nominees will come from the Bundesliga given that both Champions League finalists were from Germany, but Ozil has begged to differ - with apologies to his international team mates.

"He is very important for the team and also plays well in almost every game, no matter the competition," he told Die Welt.

"I see it every day in training, what he does, how he works. Cristiano is the best. Sorry to my international team-mates, but there's still the Best Player in Europe Award!

"Only Ronaldo can win the Ballon d'Or."

Ronaldo has scored 55 goals in 55 games for Real Madrid this season.
