'New Real Madrid coach must understand the club'

With Jose Mourinho set to leave the club this summer, one of los Blancos' young prospects has outlined the necessary credentials for his successor

Alvaro Morata says Real Madrid's new coach must be someone who "understands the club and the values that it represents".

Current boss Jose Mourinho will depart the Santiago Bernabeu this summer after a turbulent season in which los Blancos failed to retain their Liga crown and were beaten in the final of the Copa del Rey.

And the 19-year-old striker believes the club must be careful in identifying his successor and outlined the need for a figure who is representative of what the club is about.

“Whichever coach that comes in, be it [Carlo] Ancelotti or any other, he will have his own way of working. They are all different so it makes no sense comparing them to previous coaches,” he told Marca.

“Real Madrid needs a coach that knows the club and understands the values that it represents.”

Morata then revealed his debt of gratitude to Mourinho for helping him to break into the first team setup.

“I am hugely grateful to Mourinho. He is the coach who gave me my opportunity with Real Madrid and I wish him lots of luck. I think he would have liked to have left the club a bit happier,” he added.

The teenager also commented on one of the club’s reported transfer targets Gareth Bale, and admitted would be delighted if he joined the club.

"He would be a good signing for the club. Bale is one of the best players in the world and at Real Madrid we always have the best. I am convinced that if the club want him he would be a great signing.”

Morata has made 18 appearances for Madrid, scoring two goals in the process.
