The Liga MX playoffs kick off Wednesday and America coach Miguel Herrera is guaranteeing that his side will take the game to Mexico City rival Pumas in the first leg of the series in the Ciudad Universitaria.
“The first thing I’m sure of is that it will be spectacular,” stated the bubbly Herrera in a joint press conference ahead of the game. “It’s a clasico and we’re going into it with the idea of going through to the next round and winning both the games.”
There’s no love lost between the two clubs – whose stadiums are just five miles apart in the southern end of Mexico City – and with 2,500 police due to work the event, Herrera has also called for fans to make the game a “party of peace.”
Pumas coach Antonio Torres Servin also asked supporters to behave and, like Herrera, was confident the two teams will put on a good set of games.
“I think it’s going to be a party, we want to give a good show,” stated Torres Servin, who has never coached in a Liga MX playoff match. “The team that commits the least mistakes will take the series, that’s why we have to concentrate and take the chances that come our way.”
America won the game between the two sides 1-0 back in April at the Estadio Azteca thanks to a goal from Christian Benitez.
