Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has reacted positively after receiving veiled criticism from his coach Tito Vilanova.

Following Barca's 7-0 aggregate defeat by Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, Pique claimed the side needed reinforcements over the summer.

However, Vilanova appeared to hit back a few days later by stating: "I suppose the player who spoke about making changes doesn't believe he should be one of them."

This appeared to hint there was friction between the duo but Pique has moved quickly to quash such suggestions.

"I hold Tito in the highest regard," he said. "He was coaching me when I was 15 years old.

"I don't feel bad about what was said yesterday [Saturday]. He is the manager and he has every right to say what he wants.

"I said that we needed to improve and I was talking about myself on a personal level. We all need to improve next season."

The 26-year-old was part of the Barca side that bounced back from their Champions League exit with a 4-2 win over Real Betis in La Liga on Sunday.

And Pique believes the victory, fuelled by Lionel Messi, was further proof that his Argentine team-mate is still the best player in world football.

"We know that Leo [Messi] is still the best," he added. "He will continue to be the best for many years to come.

"He knows to be at the right place at the right time."

Barca can wrap up the La Liga title next week when they take on Atletico Madrid.
