Ozil: We do not revolve around Ronaldo

Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil insists that they are not a one-man team ahead of the Clasico match against Barcelona.

Ronaldo has highlighted his importance to Real after scoring 46 goals last season to fire them to the league title and he has continued in the same vein this season with 21 goals in 20 games so far. Ozil recognised that the Portuguese has been key to Real Madrid's game, but insists that the team comes before the individual.

"We are all aware of his [Ronaldo's] potential," he was quoted as saying on AS, "He is one of the best players in the world and he has shown time and time again how important he is to the team but first and foremost, we are a team, and we don't revolve around Cristiano or any other player.

"We know his strong points and we need him but we have to work as a team if we are to be successful."

Real Madrid will face Barcelona in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final and Ozil is relishing the challenge against the defending cup champions.

"This is the best derby in the world and it's always a special occasion for us because we want to prove ourselves against the very best. Of course you always want to win games like these, especially for the fans, who support us throughout the year. We want to pay them back with a win over Barcelona.

"Our aim is to show our potential out on the pitch and win both matches. We are in the semi-finals and playing against Barcelona, so we have to give our all and try and win.

"We know that Barcelona are a very potent team with great players but we have to focus on ourselves. We are on a good run and we are also playing at home. Our aim is to win the game, make our fans proud and try to qualify for the final."

Ozil has already made 137 appearances for Real Madrid at the age of 24 and has been hailed as one of the key players for both club and country. However, the German international insists that the team comes first before personal accolades.

"I'm happy that people think of me like that, my aim is always to show my potential on the pitch. I love playing football and I enjoy myself when I'm out on the pitch. I'm very proud that people say that about me, of course.

"I'm very grateful to be able to play for such a great club. My debut was a very special day but nothing compares to winning trophies, like the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, the Supercopa or the league title, those remain in your memory forever."

Real Madrid will host Barcelona in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final and make the way to Camp Nou for the second leg a month from now on 27 February.
