Marchisio in war of words with Napoli

Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio has stoked the fires in a controversial interview where he openly revealed his "antipathy for Napoli".

When asked a loaded question about his football dislikes, Marchisio did not hold back - giving full vent to his feelings for the Neapolitan side.

He told Corriere della Sera: "It's not any particular face, but a team, especially after the rough Coppa Italia and Italian Super Cup Finals: Napoli.

"When I am faced with Napoli, something goes off in me."

The interview has led to a sharp exchange between the two cubs. First, the Partenopei issued a strong statement condemning Marchisio's statements.

"Marchisio's statement gives grave insult to Napoli and to Italian football. It is surprising that it comes from a player of his stature and who hails from such a prestigious club," went Napoli's response.

"We hope that this is a misunderstanding and we expect clarification from the player and Juventus."
The Bianconeri responded by defending their player.

"Claudio Marchisio expressed an opinion during an interview with the Style section of the Corriere della Sera," Juve wrote on their club website.

"This opinion was clearly referring to the healthy sense of competition that has seen Napoli and Juventus take part in fiery and spectacular matches.

"There was no offence: failing to comprehend that means trying to create controversy out of nothing."

Tensions have been high at Napoli as they were recently slapped with a two-point deduction for failing to report an alleged act of match-fixing in 2010. The club also endured a poor run of form last month, with losses to Inter Milan and Bologna severely denting their title bid.

They are currently seven points behind Juve in the Serie A and face stiff competition from Inter, Lazio and Fiorentina for a place in the top three.

Juve ran out 2-0 winners against Napoli when the two last met in Turin in October and the reverse fixture will take place at the Stadio San Paolo on March 3.
