Harry could be quids in at QPR
TONY FERNANDES knows how to make a pound or two and is not scared of spending them to help rock-bottom Rangers.

At the moment, it looks likely that QPR’s majority owner might drop another cash kitty on manager Harry Redknapp’s desk when the transfer window opens next month.

Despite a 16-game winless league run, Clint Hill is adamant a transfer chest will not solve their problems.

Former boss Mark Hughes laid out more than £30million on players, signed big-name free transfers and sent the wage bill soaring through the roof.

Agents have also drained £6.8m in the last two transfer windows, but Hill believes splashing the cash adds pressure and can damage morale. The defender said: “The chairman is throwing money everywhere — left, right and centre — and sometimes that doesn’t work.

“You’ve got to stick with people and work on them and try and get the best out of the ability they have.

“Don’t get me wrong, I do think we will try to get a couple of players, but I don’t think it will be five, six or seven like people are talking about.

“It might just be the players to help us along and hopefully that will be it.”

Hill has had spells at clubs like Tranmere and Oldham, where penny-pinching was daily life.

He added: “I’ve been here three years now and I’ve seen loads of players come and go. I just think we need a bit of stability at the moment, a settled team and a system of play that suits us. I think we’re getting there.”

The point at Wigan was the West London club’s third consecutive draw and, although defensively disappointing, the players are responding to Redknapp’s man-management.

Shaun Derry, Hill, Ryan Nelsen and perhaps Robert Green are in the last-chance saloon as Premier League players and they showed they are desperate to stay among the elite.

There are five players at the club in Djibril Cisse, Ji-Sung Park, Julio Cesar, Fabio and Jose Bosingwa who have featured in Champions League finals.

That has inevitably led to talk that they are too good to go down.

Honest Hill insisted: “The table doesn’t lie, we’ve been poor.

“But we’ve got some good players here and we just need confidence to go out there and perform and win games.

“The longer it goes on, the bigger the next game becomes and, to be fair, they don’t get much bigger for us than a derby against Fulham on Saturday.

“If you can’t get up for that game — no matter what position you are in the league — there’s something wrong with you.”

Redknapp added: “Whatever they have won before is in the past. This is all about now.”

Jamie Mackie’s poor clearance led to James McCarthy giving Wigan the lead in the 19th minute, before Nelsen’s fierce header levelled.

Cisse restored Rangers’ lead with 19 minutes left, but McCarthy responded just 180 seconds later.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is backing Redknapp to pull off another Houdini act and save Rangers like he did at Portsmouth.

He said: “They need a little bit of luck and a break.

“Harry can use his experience in one half of the season.”
