Harry wants Republic job
I'LL BE TH-EIRE ... Harry Redknapp fancies a crack at the Republic of Ireland job

GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI last night fuelled confusion about his job by insisting there’s “no problem”, despite plans to oust him.

The under-fire boss remained defiant after a 4-1 win over the Faroes, saying: “There is no problem, no problem, no problem for me. Ciao.”

It came as Harry Redknapp emerged as the frontrunner to take over as Republic manager. Despite last night’s victory, the Trap door is open for the Italian after last Friday’s 6-1 drubbing against Germany and our disastrous Euro 2012 campaign.

Even a superb goal by Marc Wilson — himself previously ignored by Trap — may not be enough to save Il Gaffer.

Sources close to former Tottenham boss Redknapp confirmed he is now being lined up to take over the plum job, for which he would want a four-year contract.

One said: “He’s genuinely intrigued at the possibility of managing Ireland. He’s enjoying his time away from the game, but he does want to get back to work.”

It’s understood people close to Redknapp have already made contact with the FAI over the position and the association is considering its response.

The controversy surrounding Trapattoni’s future reached fever pitch yesterday.

He cancelled this morning’s traditional post-match press conference, saying he’s going to see his sick sister in Italy.

On RTE television, pundit Liam Brady rowed in behind Trap, insisting: “This guy knows what he’s doing. We’re on track to qualify... We’ll look ridiculous to the rest of the football world if we sack this man.”

But John Giles insisted: “I think it’s time to go, regardless of the result tonight.”
