Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris will demand showdown talks with Andre Villas-Boas after being left out of the side that beat Carlisle in the Capital One Cup.

Frustrated: Tottenham's Hugo Lloris

Lloris, a £10 million signing from Lyon on transfer deadline day, has become increasingly agitated at his fringe role since joining the club last month, having been told 41-year-old Brad Friedel will continue as first-choice keeper.

It's a decision that has rilled the France international, but after a meeting with Villas-Boas last week, he was promised opportunities in the cup matches to show off his ability in a bid to try and oust Friedel from the team.

But despite featuring against Lazio in the Europa League, Lloris was told he would not be needed for last night's clash with Carlisle, with Carlo Cudicini and Heurelho Gomes called upon to make the trip north.

According to a Spurs source, the snub has come as another huge disappointment for Lloris, who wants further
talks with Villas-Boas this week to explain the decision, as he struggles to come to terms with life as a deputy, having been regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world during his time at Lyon.

Lloris is hopeful the chat will take place before the weekend's clash with Manchester United, as he seeks clarification over which matches he is likely to play in during the coming months, with his position as France captain under threat if he fails to earn regular playing time.

When quizzed on Lloris' absence last night, Tottenham refused to see it as a valid talking point, with assistant manager Steffen Freund keen to focus attention elsewhere:

'It is not the right moment to talk about individual players because we had a fantastic performance as a team today,' said Freund.

'Let's see tomorrow who is available for the game with Manchester United.'
