Nigel Adkins has refused to give Kelvin Davis any assurances about his Southampton future after dropping him for the 4-1 win against Aston Villa.
Davis has been the club’s first choice goalkeeper during promotion from League One and the Championship.
But after a rough start to life in the Premier League which saw Southampton lose four games in a row Adkins opted for 20-year-old Paulo Gazzaniga between the sticks.
And after the gamble paid off Adkins admitted he could not promise Davis a quick return to the team.
“[He took it] very well. He is the ultimate professional,” the Southampton boss said.
“I spoke to him on Thursday and told him what I was going to do. He took it in the right manner and was very supportive of Paulo.
“I give him the utmost respect because he has done ever so much for this football club, having been where we were to where we are now.
“He has been an integral part of that and he is still a larger than life character in the dressing room and that will remain that way.”
