Nuri Sahin is "certain" that Turkey has what it takes to qualify for the World Cup in 2014, as the side prepares to kick off its qualification campaign on Friday.

The Crescent-Stars have failed to participate in the last two major international tournaments, but reached the semifinals of both Japan and South Korea in 2002 and Euro 2008.

Speaking ahead of Turkey's first qualifier against Netherlands, Sahin claimed the team has been given a sense of direction by new coach Abdullah Avci, and is more than equipped to book a place in the showpiece event.

"We are on the right path, I'm certain we'll be there in 2014," the midfielder told reporters. "Competition is necessary in every team, we would all like to have starting positions. However, it's up to the coach."

As well as the Oranje, Turkey has also been paired with Andorra, Estonia, Hungary and Romania in Group D.
