Former AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko says he's retiring from soccer after 17 years and wants a career in politics.

Shevchenko, who started and ended his career with Dynamo Kiev, announced his retirement on the club's website.

The 35-year-old helped Dynamo win five successive Ukrainian titles in the 1990s, scoring 60 goals.

He joined Milan in 1999, winning a series of trophies with the Serie A club. He moved to Chelsea in 2006 before returning to Kiev three years later.

Shevchenko scored both goals against Sweden in his team's only victory of the 2012 European Championship before a home crowd.
