Cristiano Ronaldo: I will take the penalties against Germany

Portugal and Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo is sure his country can compete with an in-form Germany team in their Euro 2012 opener in L'viv on Saturday.

After an embarrassing 3-1 loss to Turkey last week, Portugal are eager to hit form against die Mannschaft, who are fresh off the back of a comfortable 2-0 win over Israel.

Ronaldo is hoping for a penalty in tomorrow’s crucial Group B match, the 27-year-old is confident that his impressive track record with spot kicks will play to his strengths if he is required to step up for a penalty against Germany.

"I took penalities very well during the season.” Ronaldo told reporters. "You have to give credit to the goalkeepers who defended my penalties.

"Tomorrow, if there is a penalty, I will be the one to take it. I will try to do my best."

Despite their loss to the Turks, Ronaldo is certain Portugal can perform against Germany, an outfit he considers to be one of the strongest in this year's edition of the European Championship.

"We are here to compete against one of the strongest teams of the tournament," he continued.

"We want to compete and enjoy this. I am confident that we will play a great game.

"I do not feel any anxiety and I do not see it in our players. Our team is fine and prepared.

"Germany are strong contenders for the Euro title. They have shown that they are an excellent side, with great players. Germany are not solely based on individual talent.

"In such a short tournament, the team which is physically best and tactically strongest will win. I hope that Portugal will be that team.

“I hope that we will make a great campaign. We will try to go as far as possible."
