I have a say

Aston Villa's decision to appoint Paul Lambert as their new manager has a level of inevitability about it. Although, I have some time to consider the possibility of him leaving, it is still a shock and makes me worry about the Premier League future of Norwich City.

However, I also take the view that David McNally is as good of a chief executive as Paul Lambert is a football manager. Three years ago, the appointment of Paul Lambert was a significant risk, but a risk worth taking. It was clear that McNally knew who he wanted and did what he had to do to make the deal happen.

Good chief executives aren't that way because they wait for things to happen, they are that way because they are prepared for what might happen. McNally would have known for some time that there was every possibility that Paul Lambert may move on.

So, he will know exactly who the top managers are and which would be the right fit for Norwich City. The club will claim that they are now searching for the new manager, but that process really started a long time ago. David McNally will already know who he wants to fill the role.

This isn't to say that the club would have interviewed managers while Lambert was still in charge, but they would have been keeping an eye on the top managers. In much the same way as they keep an eye on the top players. The key to this appointment is the prior preparation that will have been done.

Three years ago, this club was in a real mess and playing League One football. Now, things have drastically changed, and the club is back in the Premier League. This job is going to be very attractive to many top managers.

This can be a fresh start and a new era for Norwich City. An era of Premier League football with another top quality manager, change is always scary, but it can often be good. Norwich fans need to put their faith in McNally to make the right call.
