The club is king
TRIBUTE ... Kenny Dalglish

KENNY DALGLISH insists he will always be in debt to Liverpool — even if he delivers an ELEVENTH trophy today.

Dalglish returned to the club he loves in January 2011 and was confirmed as full-time manager again 12 months ago this week, taking over from the axed Roy Hodgson.

He has already added the Carling Cup to the three titles, two FA Cups and four Charity Shields he won in six years in charge before quitting in 1991.

Yet as he leads the Reds into a Wembley shootout with Chelsea, King Kenny admitted he will never feel the club owes him anything — however much he brings to the trophy cabinet.

He said: “I’ll always feel because it’s Liverpool, for the opportunities they have given me, the club is always more important than any one individual — and I’m no different.

“I was lucky to get back in. It was unfortunate for Roy but someone’s misfortune is someone else’s good fortune. I owe the football club a lot more than they owe me.

“I’ve always said if I can help the football club in any way, shape or form I would always be there to help. That’s all I’ve done — if you think I’m helping, then fine.”

The side’s cup glories have gone in tandem with a dismal league campaign, which sees them languishing in eighth, one place and three points behind bitter rivals Everton. Dalglish knows it has been a huge disappointment, given the Reds’ pre-season hopes of a top-four slot.

Yet he is equally aware the impact a double dose of silverware could have on long-term plans.

He added: “We would love to have done better in the league but you can’t take away from the performances in the cups.

“If we get the league performances right, then next season will be good.

“We’ve done brilliantly in the cups and you can’t under-estimate that.

“But everyone knows we have not done what we expected ourselves in the league, let alone what anyone else expected, and that’s a disappointment.

“At the end of the season we can analyse what we have done, see if it’s good, bad or indifferent and take it from there.

“But getting to the FA Cup final is a great achievement and so was winning the Carling Cup.”

Liverpool have already beaten Chelsea twice this term, dumping them en route to the Carling Cup success.

Yet Dalglish does not think that will have any bearing on today’s game, especially with the Blues flying again.

He said: “I don’t think those two results matter.

“But they are probably getting better ones now than when we played them before.

“We know they are a good side but I don’t think we’re too bad either when we play to our level.

“We know it’s a difficult game but I’m sure they will be saying the same thing.”
