COLOGNE, Germany (AP)—Cologne is appealing Lukas Podolski’s one-game ban following the forward’s sending off in a Bundesliga match.
Podolski was sent off in the 76th minute of Cologne’s 1-0 win over Hertha Berlin on Saturday, when he become involved in a dispute with Hertha defender Levan Kobiashvili.
Kobiashvili put his arm around Podolski’s neck and the Cologne moved his head toward the Georgian, earning the Germany international a direct red card. Kobiashvili was shown his second yellow.
Cologne official Claus Horstmann says “television pictures clearly show that there was no crime.”
The club is not appealing midfielder Mato Jajalo’s three-game ban for being sent off earlier in the game.
Podolski has scored half of Cologne’s 32 league goals this season.
