Baresi: Ramos should play in the centre

Former AC Milan skipper Franco Baresi has echoed his belief that Real Madrid would benefit more by moving fullback Sergio Ramos into a central defensive position.

World Cup winner Ramos is predominantly a right-back but he has been shunted into the middle of the defence by Madrid tactician Jose Mourinho in recent encounters.

Milan legend Baresi, renowned as one of the finest ever markers in football, lauded Ramos' footballing talents.

"He has some qualities that make him different [to other defenders] and for this reason he can play multiple positions," the former Italy and AC Milan centre-half told Marca.

"I like him most in the centre: here, he plays like a champion. He is very strong in central defence."

"He plays in a more natural way and makes better use of all his qualities."

"He is good with his head, with his feet and is intelligent. Although I have to say, he is also a good full-back."

"I like players who have a strong personality on the pitch," said Baresi, who labelled Ramos "one of the best defenders in the world".

"It's clear that there may be more to come, but Sergio is already showing [his quality] now."

Ex Italian international Baresi is regarded as one of the Rossoneri's greatest ever players having spent his entire 20-year playing career at the San Siro, chalking up 719 appearances in all competitions.
