Chievo 0 : 3 Lazio - Lazio stay in contention

Lazio remain on the fringes of the Serie A title race after an impressive 3-0 win at Chievo.

Edy Reja`s side could have been forgiven for being out of sorts at Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi having been dumped out of the Coppa Italia in midweek, but they responded in the best possible manner.

Hernanes got them up and running in the first half and, although they had to wait until the closing stages for Miroslav Klose to see them over the line with a brace, they had too much for the Gialloblu.

Lazio had lost their last two games on the road, to Siena and AC Milan, and a fast start was imperative as a result.

They set their stall out in that manner too, with Senad Lukic drawing an impressive save out of Stefano Sorrentino with just five minutes on the clock.

Chievo responded, with Cyril Thereau and then Sergio Pellissier hitting over the bar, before Lazio took the lead with 21 minutes gone.

Brazil midfielder Hernanes picked the ball up just inside the area and gave Sorrentino little chance, giving his side the start they were looking for.

Pellissier led the Chievo response, with his drive being saved by Federico Marchetti, while Lazio could have doubled their lead had Giuseppe Biava been more accurate with his header from a corner.

Lukic then played in Tommaso Rocchi, who found himself one-on-one with Sorrentino, but he snatched at the chance and drilled wide.

Chievo were not doing enough to make Lazio regret their misses, though, and when they did go close, it was through Andre Dias nearly putting through his own goal - Marchetti diving to his rescue.

Lukic then wasted another opportunity, blazing over, before Marchetti was forced into action by a Chievo player when Therau took aim from outside the box.

Alberto Paloschi tried to take matters into his own hands by dancing past three Lazio defenders, only to find Marchetti in his way.

Klose then started to make his presence felt, although his first notable contribution was to miss on the rebound after Lukic hit the bar.

Biava then thought he had sealed things, but his header was ruled out for pushing in the box, before Klose did wrap it up when he turned in the area with three minutes to go and produced a clinical finish.

Two-nil was perhaps a fair reflection of the game, but Klose did not let it stay that way for long and, two minutes later, he doubled his tally from the edge of the area to round things off.
