The Argentina international has strongly been linked with a move to the Premier League champions after an impressive start to his second season at the Estadio da Luz. British sources claimed on Sunday that United was closing in on Gaitan after tabling an offer worth 35 million euros for the creative wide man.
Gaitan's agent, however, put a dampener on talk about his client's future and called on the two clubs to come to an understanding about the transfer.
"The two clubs must come to an agreement about the transfer and then they must talk to me, this is logical," Jose Iribarren told Goal.com. "Only after they reach an understanding can they contact me to know if the player is happy, if he wants to play at United, his salary, and those sort of things."
Earlier in the week, Iribarren stressed to Portuguese radio station Antena 1 that he had not been contacted by the Premier League giants over a potential transfer, while stating that his client was happy with life in Lisbon.
"He is very happy with everything at the club, his team-mates and the club's board," the agent confirmed.
Meanwhile, news daily Record claims that while United is in pole position to sign Gaitan, Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira will only agree to let the 23-year-old leave in the summer.
Gaitan, who is the top provider in the Champions League with five assists, has a 45 million euros buyout clause attached to his contract, which runs out in 2016.
