MANCHESTER, England (AP)—Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a right knee injury.
The defender twisted his knee during the first half of Wednesday’s Champions League loss to Swiss club FC Basel and was carried off on a stretcher.
United manager Alex Ferguson says Vidic will have surgery and will not play again this season.
The news comes in a difficult week for the club, which went out of the Champions League with the loss in Switzerland. The defending Premier League champions trail Manchester City by five points going into this weekend’s games.
