FRANKFURT, Germany (AP)—Wolfgang Niersbach is set to become president of the influential German football federation when Theo Zwanziger steps down in October 2012.
The 61-year-old Niersbach is a former football journalist who has been the federation’s general secretary. The federation’s regional chapters and the executive board endorsed Niersbach’s candidacy on Wednesday.
Zwanziger announced Friday that he would step down one year early.
Niersbach is the only candidate. His approval at the federation’s general assembly in October looks like a formality and he might even assume office at an earlier date.
