Arsenal hoping for Arshavin bidding war in January

Arsenal will look to create a bidding war between Schalke and Russian mega-spenders Anzhi over Andrei Arshavin.

The midfield schemer is still the club's most expensive ever signing, after joining Zenit St Petersburg for £15m in 2009, and
Arsene Wenger would want to recoup a similar fee if he has to part with the 30-year-old in January.

Russian news agency Novosti report that the Bundesliga side have already approached Arsenal to make their interest clear while Anzhi plan to wait in the wings and gazump any offer the Gunners receive.

Schalke consider Arsenal's £15m valuation of Arshavin to be excessive but, with Anzhi ready to pounce, Wenger's side are in a position of power and can hold out for the highest offer.

Arshavin has only completed one Premier League game this season and has fallen down the pecking order in Wenger's long list of attacking midfielders.
