The Argentine’s advisers claimed that their client presumed he would be given time off this week as the rest of the reserves had been told to take a week’s holiday. It was also claimed that he tried, and failed, to call Mancini on Monday to ask permission to leave and the answer he got when he asked the Italian’s assistant Fausto Salsano was ambiguous.
