Bayern Munich and Germany great Gerd Muller has challenged Mario Gomez to break his record of 40 goals in a single Bundesliga season.
"I dare Mario to break my record. Actually, I've wondered for years why the 40-goal mark has not been reached," he told Bild. "If my record is beaten by a Bayern player, it would especially please me."
Muller spent 15 years with the Bavarian giants, winning a host of trophies, including the 1971-72 league title, where he scored 40 of Bayern's 101 league goals - a feat that remains unmatched in Germany.
However, the 65-year-old believes that Gomez can surpass his record, with the 26-year-old having already found the back of the net 10 times in nine Bundesliga games.
