Sergio Aguero is ready to hunt down Wayne Rooney in the battle for the Golden Boot

SERGIO AGUERO last night insisted he will battle Wayne Rooney tooth and nail for the Golden Boot until the very last kick of the season.

Manchester City's scoring sensation — with eight goals in four Premier League starts — trails United talisman Rooney by one strike.

And the rivalry between the two fabulous bounty hunters is destined to keep both sets of fans on the edge of their seats.

Aguero, the £35million man from Atletico Madrid, already has one over Rooney — the Argentinian has a stunning £1.25m deal with Puma compared to the England man's reported £1m Nike contract.

He will also pick up a substantial bonus for topping the goalscoring charts in the Premier League, the Champions League and for scoring for Argentina — so he is in no mood for a dry run in front of goal.

Aguero, 23, said: "It will be a beautiful duel with Rooney until the very last match.

"I'm looking for a goal in every game.

"People tell me about the importance of our rivalry — and City's with United.

"This is not a rare situation for me. I had a similar experience in Spain against Real Madrid — without too much luck, I might say.

"So now I'm looking for a different outcome. I'm in good form at the moment but I believe my game can reach an even higher level.

"And I also think City are already demonstrating that we can win the title."

The son-in-law of Argentinian legend Diego Maradona added: "I just dream of scoring many, many goals.

"I am here to win titles and am not merely seeking individual honours.

"The secret behind all my goals is hard work, the help of my team-mates and luck. I am actually surprised as to how quickly I have adapted to the team and the English game.

"It's not easy for someone who has played in Argentina and Spain because the characteristics are so different. But my challenge is to improve more and more.

"I notice fans have connected with me and I am happy about that because that was one of my big doubts."

Aguero takes on Everton today fresh from his double strike at Fulham last weekend that should have sealed another victory.

But Roberto Mancini's side were surprisingly pulled back while Rooney's ninth of the campaign helped United beat Chelsea 3-1.

Aguero said: "United have won all their matches so far and against Everton on Saturday we must react to our 2-2 draw at Fulham. That was a real pain. We scored two goals on our travels and won only one point.

"It was the type of thing that only happens one out of every 10 times. But we need to forget about it."

While Aguero has been an instant success, his form and that of fellow striker Edin Dzeko has ironically kept Carlos Tevez on the bench.

But Aguero explained it was Tevez who put aside his own public dislike for Manchester to sell the city to the new recruit.

He added: "Carlos is an important footballer and is very necessary at City. I am confident he will stay with us in this important season.

"I've found life in Manchester very normal with my family, friends, football and a few tourist trips."

Just wait for the Manchester derby and Aguero's showdown with Rooney at Old Trafford on October 23.

You can bet life won't seem so normal in the build-up to that.
