AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has blamed the absence of a string of first-team players for his club's slow start to the season.

The defending champions host Cesena having taken just two points from their opening three Serie A games.

"It's not down to being lucky or unlucky," Galliani said. "The fact is that we have 12 players injured and right now it's tough but this moment will pass.

"Once we recover all of our injured players we will return to victory."

AC Milan suffered a further setback in midweek with Brazilian striker Pato sustaining a hamstring injury during their 1-1 result against Udinese.

Pato, who will be out of action for four weeks, joins Milan's growing injury list which include fellow strikers Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robinho and Kevin-Prince Boateng, as well as midfielders Gennaro Gattuso, Massimo Ambrosini and Mathieu Flamini and defenders Luca Antonini, Philippe Mexes and Daniele Bonera.

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri will have no choice but to field Stephan El Shaarawy alongside Antonio Cassano in attack.

Rivals Cesena have yet to get out of first gear following three straight defeats and are desperate to end such a run on Saturday.

Marco Giampaolo's side heads into the encounter at the San Siro on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Lazio.

"We are going through a very delicate time," Giampaolo said. "It's not nice to be at the foot of the standings but we simply have to work harder in order to turn things around."
