Motherwell missed the chance to close the gap atop the Scottish Premier League after losing 3-0 at home to St. Johnstone on Saturday, while Hearts remained unbeaten in its last six games with a 2-0 win over St. Mirren.
An own goal by Tim Clancy put St. Johstone ahead in the 20th minute at Fir Park and late goals from Francisco Sandaza and Liam Craig condemned third-place Motherwell to a second straight defeat.
Hearts improved to fourth after Jamie Hamill scored the opener from a 43rd-minute penalty, before Lee Mair’s own goal from a header gave the Edinburgh side a two-goal win.
Elsewere, Dundee United beat Inverness Caledonian Thistle 3-1, Dunfermline drew 2-2 with Hibernian and Aberdeen was held 2-2 by Kilmarnock.
Leader Rangers hosts second-place Celtic in the Old Firm derby Sunday.
