Lionel Messi has tormented Manchester United again by backing Sergio Aguero to dethrone them as Premier League champions.

Messi has inspired Barcelona to two Champions League final wins over Sir Alex Ferguson’s men in the last three seasons.

Now he reckons big mate Aguero can fire Manchester City to the title as the bitter rivals and neighbours battle it out to be top dogs of English football.

Aguero consulted Argentine and Barca superstar Messi before deciding to join Roberto Mancini’s men in a record £36m deal from Atletico Madrid.

The Argentinian has made a stunning impact at the Etihad Stadium, with six goals in his first four games, including a hat-trick to help fire City to second in the table.

The 23-year-old has revealed how Messi told him he can now become a champion at United’s expense. Aguero said: “Yes, I did speak to him (Messi) before coming here.

“We have been good friends for a long time. I did ask him and he wished me luck because, as I said, I have come here to try and win titles and he just told me winning titles is great and that I will have a bigger chance here.

“He said, ‘I hope you do win them, you will win them’ and wished me luck, so we do have a good relationship.

“We discuss other matters, but mostly related to football because we see each other quite often or speak quite often, so we already know what is going on in each other’s life.”

Aguero is gearing himself up for City’s Champions League debut at home to Napoli tonight.

The Italian outfit are the former club of his father-in-law Diego Maradona and Aguero has revealed the Argentine legend might be a surprise visitor to the Etihad Stadium.

He added: “I have spoken to Diego and said, ‘We have got Napoli in the Champions League’. His reaction was, ‘Oh, that would be an interesting game, I would love to see that game’.”
