Serie A strike appears likely to delay season

ROME (AP)—The start of the Italian league soccer season Saturday will likely be delayed because of a players’ strike.
All 20 Serie A captains signed a document this month declaring a strike if there is no collective bargaining agreement before the season opens. It is unclear if games will be made up if there is a strike.
A last-minute proposal Thursday from the Italian soccer federation was rejected. It offered $29 million to cover extra costs for a new tax applied to high-wage earners.
Serie A President Maurizio Beretta says teams want two changes to the labor agreement proposed by the players—a clause stating the players will pay the new tax, and a provision allowing coaches to force certain players to train away from the first team.
