Manchester United beats West Bromwich Albion: Fan reaction

I have a say

The 2011/12 English Premier League got underway this weekend. Manchester United began their title defense with a 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion. Here are three quick thoughts on the game.

Tough as ever

It is no secret that United are the top team of the Premier League. West Brom were reminded of that on Sunday. West Brom knew that United were a dangerous offensive team. They knew that the game would be difficult. Yet there was Wayne Rooney sprinting toward the 18-yard line unmarked. Teams must be aware of Rooney at all times. But the United attack was still able to put Rooney in position to score the first goal. United are in a class by themselves.

Trouble in net

United goalkeeper David De Gea may be the weak link on United this season. The 20-year old gave up a bad goal on a ball that trickled under his diving save attempt. Retired United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar probably cursed the television when he saw it. You knew it was a poor attempt by De Gea when United defender Nemanja Vidic stood there stunned. Rather than console his goalkeeper, Vidic just bent over in frustration. Vidic is one of the best defenders in the world. He prides himself on defense. Giving up a goal like that is a slap in the face to Vidic. It looked like nerves were getting to De Gea. After giving up the tying goal, it was open season on him. West Brom started firing shots at will. It will be interesting to see if/how De Gea rebounds from this.

The rich get richer

Though the jury is still out on De Gea, one signing appears to be the right one. United winger Ashley Young scored the game-winner in the 81st minute. It was credited as an own goal, but it was Young who created the scoring opportunity with his shot. It looks like Young will be a great addition to United this season.

So United are on the board after their first match of the 2011/12 Premier League season. It looks like United are still the team to beat.
