I have a say

The 2011 World Football Challenge is underway and you should be watching. In this second incarnation of the annual friendly tournament, more teams are involved and more games are being played. The games are being held in different venues across the United States and Canada. We are nearing the midway point of the tournament. The games have been very entertaining so far. If you have not been tuning in, here are five reasons why you should be watching the 2011 World Football Challenge.

World class teams

This is your chance to watch world class teams play here in North America. World football powers such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Juventus are all participating in this event. Last but certainly not least, FC Barcelona are headlining the event. Barcelona will play their first match on July 30, 2011. If you were ever curious to see how MLS teams would stack up against these football powers, now is your chance. Madrid have already beaten the L.A. Galaxy and United have embarrassed the Seattle Sounders 7-0.

Superstar players

These superstar players don't often come here to play. But now plenty of them are here. Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo put on an offensive display against Chivas de Guadalajara. He scored a hat trick in just nine minutes, much to the delight of fans at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, CA. Wayne Rooney scored a hat trick of his own for United against the Seattle Sounders. We have yet to see Barcelona and their list of stars including Lionel Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

Playing to win

Though this is just a friendly tournament, teams and players are playing to win. United will not accept a loss against a team like the Chicago Fire. Real Madrid are playing like the games mean more than just preseason tune-ups. They are professionals. When they take the field, they expect to win. So the games are fast, active and very entertaining. Even the lopsided matches are fun to watch (unless you are a fan of the losing team).

The rematch

On July 30, 2011, United and Barcelona will play each other at FedEx Field in Landover, MD. This will be a rematch of the 2011 UEFA Champions League Final. Barcelona defeated United 3-1 to earn the title. How will United respond in this friendly match? That remains to be seen but it will be far from friendly.

Fall in love with the game

If you have never watched international football, this is a good time to become a fan. These international teams play football the way it was meant to be played. Watching teams like Madrid, United and Barcelona go on the attack is something to be admired and appreciated. It is a beautiful game. Now is your opportunity to fall in love with it.
