LOS CARDALES, Argentina (AP)—Mano Menezes made it clear in Friday’s practice that Robinho, Neymar and Alexandre Pato will lead Brazil’s attack in its opening match against Venezuela in the Copa America.
Brazil and Argentina are the two main favorites to win the South American championship, which Brazil has won four of the last five times.
Menezes, who took over after Brazil was knocked out of last year’s World Cup in the quarterfinals, also figures to start Paulo Henrique Ganso at midfield in Sunday’s match in Group B.
Ganso and Neymar are teammates at Brazil club Santos, and considered Brazil’s best two young players.
“I expect the best of both,” Menezes told reporters. “I know they are ready and have all they need to play well.”
Menezes is fielding a team of young players, anchored by a few experienced veterans including goalkeeper Julio Cesar, right back Maicon, defender Lucio and striker Robinho.
“Robinho will always be Robinho,” Menezes said. “He’s had a very good career with the national team and I am confident he will continue it.”
Brazil also faces Paraguay and Ecuador in Group B.
