Ex-Valencia striker Mario Kempes believes his old club have the capability to compete with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona for trophies next season.

The Mestalla club have finished third in La Liga in the last two seasons, but have been a significant distance behind Spain's big two in the standings.

However, speaking to Spanish publication AS, the 1978 World Cup winner with Argentina stated that the team should aim as high as possible.

He said: "All teams starting the season should aim to be as high as possible and Valencia are no exception. We know the might of Barcelona and Real Madrid but it's always nice to compete.''

The 56-year-old is also convinced that the trio of new captures - Diego Alves, Daniel Parejo and Adil Rami - can aid their trophy assault next season.

''They [Alves and keeper Vicente Guaita] are young and the competition will help them grow. Parejo also seems like a good player, very skillful and has worked well in the teams he has been with. We also always need fresh legs for a long season so it takes a full squad to face it.''

Despite Kempes thoughts, neither Barcelona nor Real Madrid look to be resting on their laurels as each club respectively are looking to improve on their already talented squads.
