Fans turn as Egypt's African Cup hopes fade

CAIRO (AP)—With Egypt on the brink of failure to qualify for the African Cup of Nations, fans of the one-time giant have turned on the team’s controversial coach Hassan Shehata.
Websites and social media were filled Monday with calls from fans for Shehata to quit after the team’s latest embarrassing performance—a 0-0 draw Sunday against South Africa that leaves Egypt bottom of its group. It is six points off leader South Africa with two games to go and with little chance of making Gabon and Equatorial Guinea in 2012, even as one of the best second-place teams.
The decline has been a sharp one for the defending champion, which has won the continental championship a record seven times. The Pharaohs last failed to qualify for the African Cup in 1978.
