BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP)—Boca Juniors rallied to draw struggling Quilmes 2-2 on Sunday, a missed chance for the popular Buenos Aires club to move nearer the top of the Argentine Clausura standings.

Quilmes took the lead after an own goal by Matias Caruzzo in the 26th minute, and Danilo Gerlo’s strike in the 42nd made it 2-0. However, Martin Palermo and Cristian Chavez scored in the second half to level for Boca.

Boca has 26 points in 17 matches. Velez leads with 30 in 16 games.

Three other matches were set for Sunday with Colon playing late against River Plate.

Saturday’s match at Rosario between Newell’s Old Boys and San Lorenzo was called off after a police officer was shot by hooligans before the match began. He sustained only minor injuries and the Argentine Football Association has not rescheduled the match.

Violence is common at club matches in Argentina. Three matches have been suspended in 2011 by violence, and 13 people have been killed in football-related violence in just over a year. The last death was March 20 when a San Lorenzo fan died after a confrontation with police outside the Velez Sarsfield stadium.

The nonprofit group “Let’s Save Football” says 256 people have been killed in Argentina in football-related violence since 1924.
