ARSENE WENGER claims Barcelona have yet to show any interest in Cesc Fabregas.

The Spaniards failed in a £35million bid for the Arsenal captain last summer but have yet to make any approach since the end of the season.

Gunners fans have been fearing Fabregas - also a target for Manchester City and Real Madrid - could be tempted back to former club Barca.

The European champions have repeatedly eyed their ex-Academy star, 24, but it seems they may no longer have the cash to make a massive signing.

Wenger said: "There was an interest from Barcelona last year which I won't hide.

"This year there hasn't been an interest. My No 1 wish is to keep Fabregas - for me he is the best midfielder in the world and we naturally built the team around him."

Wenger has admitted Arsenal must rewind the clock - and sign defenders like Tony Adams and Martin Keown and is heading to South America as he looks to flex his muscles in the transfer market.

He has targeted a striker and defensive midfielder but he is also aiming to strengthen the club's worst area, central defence.

Wenger added: "I'm going to supervise players in South America then I am coming back."

Bolton's Gary Cahill is one target although Arsenal may have to fork out up to a staggering £25m.

Asked if he will sign an Adams or Keown-like player, he said: "Yes, because we beat Man United, Chelsea - but we dropped points when the game became typically English. You put a high ball up and get stuck in. It's at that point where we lost points."

Midfielder Samir Nasri will be fined by France after turning up two hours late for training without a decent explanation.
