Messi: Barca can win so much more

LIONEL MESSI vowed to carry on leading the Barcelona dynasty for many years to come.

His words after the Catalans creamed Manchester United will do nothing to sooth Alex Ferguson's pain.

The United chief admitted he had never experienced such a spanking as the one meted out to his sorry troops by Messi & Co.

The world's best player savaged United and was Man of the Match as irrepressible Barcelona won their fourth Champions League, their third in the last six seasons.

And Messi said: "This team has done tremendous things but we want to carry on winning.

"Now we're going on holiday but next year this team will return in the same way because we are a team of winners.

"My next goal is to win the Copa America with Argentina and next season to win everything again with Barcelona."

It was his 54th minute blast that restored Barca's lead before David Villa's super finish put the gloss on a glorious night for the Catalans.

Wayne Rooney's equaliser that cancelled out Pedro's opener just delayed the inevitable as Barcelona enhanced their "best-team-ever" tag at Wembley.

Messi said: "We lifted the cup and I scored a goal. I think we played a fantastic game as a team. We showed who we are and the truth is we were so superior to them we deserved the victory.

"To be the Man of the Match is the least important thing, because it was incredible how we played. We were very good in all areas of the game.

"We're very happy to lift another trophy. It was a difficult season but we showed who we are. We were the better team."

Though Messi was the superstar of the night, maestro Xavi put in a show-stopping performance completing 141 of his 148 passes.

It was a seminar for Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs who cut sorry figures as they chased shadows.

Xavi said: "We dominated and we had the ball. They only had one shot on target when they scored. To win the Champions League three times in six years is historic.

"We want to continue and we have to try and emulate this. Barcelona were so superior to Manchester.

"We want to dedicate this to the Barca fans because we think we're doing something huge and we want to enjoy it with them.

"We played great football and it's now three years where we've been doing great things. We felt comfortable throughout the game all over the pitch."

Captain for the night as half-fit Carles Puyol came on only as a late sub, Xavi allowed Eric Abidal to put on the armband and lift the European Cup 70 days after an operation for a liver tumour.

Xavi spoke with the other two captains before the game and they agreed Abidal would have the honour of leading the celebrations.

This touch of class summed up what these Barca players are all about - and showed their humanity.

Xavi said: "It was an important detail for Abidal. I think he deserved it.

"We spoke with Carles and Victor Valdes and he deserved it for everything his family has suffered and everything he's been through."
