FOOTIE ace STEPHEN IRELAND is to marry girlfriend Jessica Lawlor - after popping the question in a £25,000 proposal on a paradise island.

Aston Villa ace Stephen, 24, flew 25-year-old Jessica and a group of friends to California, then hired a yacht to take them to Catalina Island.

Stephen hid an enormous diamond ring in his swimming trunks, then got down on one knee at sunset.

A pal said: "Jess just kept saying 'Oh my God' - then of course she said yes. It must have cost £25,000, and he was very romantic."

Two years ago Stephen gave Jessica a £260,000 Bentley for her birthday.
