Adu makes surprise return to U.S. team for Gold Cup

MIAMI, May 23 (Reuters) - United States coach Bob Bradley has recalled forward Freddy Adu, naming the former ‘gold boy’ of American soccer, in the 23-man squad for next month’s CONCACAF Gold Cup and the June 4 friendly against world champions Spain.

Adu’s recall is a surprise as he is currently playing for Caykur Rizespor in the Turkish second division after a series of disappointing loan spells and has not played for the national team since 2009.

There is no place in the team for Sporting Kansas City striker Teal Bunbury in a squad which is largely based around European players.

New York Red Bulls’ 18-year-old striker Juan Agudelo was selected after scoring twice in his four appearances for the national side so far.

The U.S face Spain in Boston on June 4 and then open their Gold Cup Group C campaign against Canada in Detroit on June 7.

Bradley’s team then go on to face Panama in Tampa and Guadeloupe in Kansas City.
