Sergio Aguero struck a hat-trick as Atletico Madrid gave departing coach Quique Sanchez Flores a winning farewell with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Real Mallorca, who escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth.

Despite Aguero's heroics though, tonight's victory was not enough to see Atletico secure their target of a top-six finish.

The Rojiblancos had already been guaranteed a spot in next season's Europa League but were hoping to claim fifth or sixth place to enter the tournament proper.

As it was, with Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao also winning tonight, Atletico had to settle for seventh place and a place in the qualifying round.

For Mallorca, they will be playing top-flight football again next season - although they ended up finishing just a point above Deportivo La Coruna, who went down after losing 2-0 at home to Valencia.

Atletico looked in total control after building a 3-0 lead by the hour-mark through goals from Aguero (two) and Juanfran, but Mallorca pulled two quick strikes back thanks to Jonathan De Guzman and Pierre Webo.

Aguero's hat-trick goal in the 81st minute looked to have ended Mallorca's fightback, but Webo's second late gave the home side hope again.

Mallorca could not quite force an equaliser, but with Depor losing, the Balearic Islanders were still able to celebrate survival.

Aguero came into the match having netted nine times in Atletico's previous 11 fixtures and he was on the mark again just 13 minutes into tonight's game - the final one in charge for Sanchez Flores.

The Argentinian latched onto a long punt forward, skipped past marker Jose Carlos Nunes and drilled a shot past Dudu Aouate to open the scoring.

Juanfran then made it 2-0 five minutes later following a defense-splitting pass by Jose Antonio Reyes, who also set up Aguero for Atletico's third in the 60th minute.

There was still work for Aguero to do as he brought down Reyes' chip over the Osasuna defence, but the Atletico captain curled a brilliant shot into the far top corner.

That looked to be game, set and match for the visitors, but a penalty from De Guzman - awarded after Gonzalo Castro's shot had struck Juan Valera's arm - combined with a powerful Webo header into the top corner saw Mallorca bring the score back to 3-2.

Aguero was not about to see his side's hard work go to waste though, and he showed great strength and skill to score a fantastic third to make it 4-2.

Another unstoppable Webo header in injury-time saw Mallorca move closer again but they could not force a last-gasp equaliser - not that it mattered in the end as it was Depor who ultimately bid farewell to the top flight.
