NYON, Switzerland (AP)—Villarreal players Nilmar and Santi Cazorla could be suspended for the first leg of the Europa League semifinal against FC Porto for getting deliberate yellow cards in the previous round.
UEFA said Tuesday that its disciplinary committee will hear their cases Wednesday.
The Brazil forward and Spain midfielder received yellow cards near the end of Villarreal’s 5-1 victory over FC Twente in the first leg of the quarterfinals.
Both players served bans—activated by their third yellow card in the competition—during the return leg, which Villarreal won 3-1.
UEFA also will decide Wednesday if Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta will miss the first leg of the Champions League semifinal against Real Madrid on April 27 for the same offense.
Iniesta appeared to provoke a yellow card during the quarterfinal first-leg against Shakhtar Donetsk by not retreating 10 yards (meters) at a free kick. Barcelona won 5-1, and won the return 1-0 without Iniesta.
Any suspensions can be challenged at UEFA’s appeals body.
