Sie Alex Ferguson Aims to give city a ailver bullet

SIR ALEX FERGUSON knows what Roberto Mancini is going through as his rival busts a gut to land his first trophy as Manchester City boss.

But if Roberto Mancini expects some sympathy from his Manchester United counterpart then he can think again.

In fact, nothing would give Sir Alex Ferguson greater pleasure than to make sure the Italian’s wait for silverware stretches into next season at least.

This would mean Fergie has got the better of Manchester City once again and guided United into yet another FA Cup Final.

The bitter rivals clash at Wembley today in a semi-final showdown that promises to have a huge impact on the respective seasons of both Manchester clubs.

For Mancini, it would keep alive his chances of ending City’s 35-year trophy drought, not to mention boosting his chances of staying in a job at Eastlands.

But a win for Fergie would maintain United’s relentless charge towards a second Treble under the Scot.

It is hard to believe now but Fergie had to wait almost four years to land his first trophy as United boss.

He was put out of his misery in 1990 when he led United to an FA Cup win over Crystal Palace in a replay, after the initial game finished 3-3 after extra-time.

It saw United equal Tottenham and Aston Villa’s record of seven FA Cup triumphs and Fergie never looked back.

Fergie reckons it is only a matter of time before big-spending City will win something but he admits the pressure will never go away until this happens.

He said: “It was a big moment for us, but we were confident of winning.

“It was a fantastic final, one of the better ones, 3-3 in a cup final and we won the replay.

“Winning the first trophy at any level is important. I’ve experienced that of winning the first trophy at Aberdeen, St Mirren and here and it’s a great feeling.

“I can’t judge that at all (whether City have become obsessed). It’s obvious with the money they’ve invested they have got big plans.

“There’s no question about that and there’s nothing wrong with that. You try and do the best with what you’ve got.

“They have a strong squad and their position at the moment is fair.

“This is where they wanted to be, in the Champions League next season, and they have a good chance of that.

“It’s between five of them, with Tottenham probably in the same position. It’s between those two.

“You would expect Chelsea, Arsenal and ourselves to be in there. So no doubt there’s been a definite improvement there with City.”

While Mancini would gladly take one trophy this season, Fergie has set his sights much higher and is aiming to have three in United’s bulging cabinet before the end of next month.

He has been boosted by the return to fitness of most of his leading stars and reckons the current momentum could make United unstoppable.

He added: “We have a strong squad now and the bench reflects that. We go into this game with confidence, it should be a really exciting game.

“A derby game in London, which is unusual, but we are ready for it. The players are in great momentum at the moment, the confidence is high and we are playing well.

“We are fighting for very corner, which is a great attitude to have at this time of the season.

“We have got the moment. We are winning games at this point of the season and the consistency of the team is good.”

Fergie will be without the suspended Wayne Rooney but such is the strength in depth at his disposal that he will call on Dimitar Berbatov, the Premier League’s leading scorer, to partner Javier Hernandez.

He added: “It’s been unfortunate for Dimitar because he’s a fantastic player.

“But the reasons are obvious, the emergence of Hernandez in the last couple of months has been startling.

“He’s improving all the time, he’s getting stronger and it’s difficult to leave a player out when he hits that kind of form.”
