Sampdoria defender Daniele Gastaldello is backing his side to beat the drop as they prepare to face fellow relegation strugglers Lecce at the Luigi Ferraris stadium on Sunday.

The Blucerchiati have managed to finish in the top half of the standings for the last seven seasons since gaining promotion to the top flight in 2003.

However, Samp have their work cut out to defend their Serie A status after just one victory in their last 13 games.

Last weekend's goalless draw at Chievo left Samp languishing in 15th position in the table, two points clear of safety.

Success against Lecce would be another step towards survival.

"This is a crucial game for us and we must win," said Gastaldello.

"Three points would bring us closer to avoiding the drop.

"We face a team that, like us, is fighting to avoid relegation so it will be a battle from start to finish.

"We face seven finals before the end of the season and I am confident that we will do well in our remaining games."

A defeat on Sunday would make things tough for Alberto Cavasin's Sampdoria, who still have to take on the likes of AC Milan, city rivals Genoa and Roma in their remaining games.

The visitors, who are one point behind Samp and one point clear of the drop zone, climbed to safety after their surprising 2-0 triumph over Udinese in the last round.

Having lost their previous three games, Lecce handed a battling display to end Udinese's 13-match unbeaten run.

"We have to keep working hard because we face an arduous task," De Canio said. "The team is looking good and gaining confidence at the right time.

"There are still many games left to play and we cannot lose our focus."
