LONDON (AP)—Big-spending English club Manchester City and 2008 winner Zenit St. Petersburg were eliminated from the Europa League despite registering victories in the second legs of their last-16 matches on Thursday.
City beat Dynamo Kiev 1-0 thanks to Aleksandar Kolarov’s 39th-minute free kick at Eastlands but went down 2-1 on aggregate. The host’s cause was not helped by the sending off of Italy striker Mario Balotelli in the 36th for a dangerous tackle.
Russian club Zenit, behind 3-0 from the first leg at Dutch champion FC Twente, scored two first-half goals in the return match but couldn’t find an aggregate equalizer.
Spartak Moscow routed Ajax 3-0 at home to advance 4-0 on aggregate and Benfica progressed after drawing 1-1 at Paris Saint-Germain.
