Catania 1 : 0 Sampdoria - Super-sub Llama breaks Sampdoria

Ten-man Sampdoria battled manfully at Catania but in the end could not prevent new manager Alberto Cavasin's reign beginning with a Serie A defeat.

Cavasin, appointed earlier this week to replace the sacked Domenico Di Carlo, must have wondered what he had let himself in for when Fernando Tissone was sent off after 23 minutes.

His new charges then held out until 15 minutes from time, when substitute Cristian Llama finally broke their resistance.

The defeat was Samp's third in a row and left them with just one victory in their last 11 matches.

It also saw them slip closer to the relegation zone as they were leapfrogged by their opponents.

In a lively opening 10 minutes, Adrian Ricchiuti's close-range effort was saved by Samp goalkeeper Gianluca Curci, while at the other end Massimo Maccarone wasted a glorious chance, firing wide after being left unmarked in front of goal.

The game changed in the 23rd minute when Tissone was handed a second yellow card for a foul on Pablo Alvarez.

Samp did their best to pose an attacking threat, but Maccarone's 30-yard strike, which sailed high and wide, was the best they could muster.

At the other end, Ezequiel Carboni's long-range effort was a little closer, while a cross-shot from Alvarez was tipped over the bar by Curci.

Perhaps the best chance of the half fell to Catania defender Giovanni Marchese in stoppage time, but he headed a perfect cross from Francesco Lodi over the bar.

Given their numerical advantage, Catania struggled to create much after the break with Maxi Lopez firing wide from a narrow angle and Ricchiuti's shot from distance going over, whilst for the visitors Daniele Mannini's 30-yard strike drew a save from Mariano Andujar.

As the 10 men began to tire the chances improved, and Ricchiuti was wayward after Lopez controlled Ezequiel Schelotto's cross on his chest.

The goal arrived 15 minutes from time with Llama applying a great finish to Lodi's corner.

Curci denied Gonzalo Bergessio a second from close range, while Daniele Dessena audaciously attempted to rescue a point for his side but his shot from his own half went narrowly over.
