Gomez hits hat trick as Bayern beats Stuttgart

BERLIN (AP)—Mario Gomez scored a hat trick to lead Bayern Munich to a 5-3 win at Stuttgart in the Bundesliga on Sunday in the last round before the winter break.
Gomez opened the scoring against his former club in the 31st minute when he was played through by Thomas Mueller. The striker returned the favor five minutes later to allow Mueller poke the ball past the goalkeeper from close range.
Teammate Franck Ribery scored before halftime, and Gomez completed his hat trick in the second half.
Martin Harnik scored two and Christian Gentner added another for Stuttgart.
Defending champion Bayern is in fifth place with 29 points, 14 behind leader Borussia Dortmund.
Stuttgart is second from bottom with 12 points.
Substitute Patrick Helmes equalized for Bayer Leverkusen in a 2-2 draw against visiting Freiburg.
Helmes scored in the 74th minute, three minutes after he had an effort ruled offside, and four after being brought on by coach Jupp Heynckes.
Leverkusen is level with Mainz on 33 points, 10 behind leader Borussia Dortmund but remaining third on goal difference. Freiburg has 28 points.
In heavy snowfall, Leverkusen took the lead when Arturo Vidal converted a penalty in the 15th minute after Julian Schuster had fouled Tranquillo Barnetta.
Freiburg equalized through Jan Rosenthal and took the lead through Stefan Reisinger.
