Campbell warns Carroll: You've done the easy part - now keep it going

Sol Campebll has warned Toon team-mate Andy Carroll that building a long-term international career will prove more difficult than winning his first England cap.

The hugely-experienced former Arsenal and Spurs defender, who has 73 caps to his name, insists that scoring the goals to get into Fabio Capello’s squad is the easy part of Carroll’s challenge.

Campbell believes the test facing the 21-year-old Geordie is finding the maturity and focus to become a permanent fixture in the England side like he did between 1996 and 2007.

Newcastle’s senior statesmen believes Carroll must learn to respect the game if he is to shake off the bad-boy reputation.

Campbell puts his England longevity down to surrounding himself with good people and he advises the Gateshead-born striker to do the same. He said:”He’s come on leaps and bounds. Everyone knows he has the raw talent.

“People at the club have to make sure they nurture that and channel it in the right areas.

“And he has to say, ‘What do I want out of my career?’ He works hard but there are a few things he’s going to have to work at over the next two or three years.

“That will determine how long he has in his England career. It’s not about how you get into the England team, it’s if you can stay there.

“You have to be humble and respect where you are in football. You have to be willing to listen and learn and train hard.

“You have to be like a sponge and take in all the information – the right information.”

The hot-tempered Carroll was fined £1,000 for assault last month and has attracted lurid headlines for his lifestyle.

Campbell added: “The pressure on young players has escalated, you wonder where it’s going to end.

”I can understand how people see this club as a goldfish bowl because it is full-on.

“You have to concentrate on football and let everything else float around.”
